Patti Smith “In the late seventies and early eighties, record labels and periodicals ther than fashion magazines did not use professional hair-and-makeup people or clothing stylists on shoots. It was rare for them to pay for use of a photo studio or for any assistants. They’d say there was no budget for it. I wanted to help artists have an identity that fit their music, so I would often pay for whatever it took to make for a better shoot. I did it myself or got friends who did that kind of work to help me for very little money.”
