Lynn Goldsmith – Pete Townshend, The Who (1978)

“Pete Townshend. I’d just finished up a portrait session with fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger. He asked if I knew Pete Townshend, and I replied, ‘Not really.’ Tommy was sponsoring Pete’s solo concert at the Beacon Theater in New York that night. Afterward there would be a dinner, and he asked me to come. When I got there, Tommy grabbed my arm and took me to Pete’s table. Pete jumped up from the meal, gave me a big hug, and said, ‘Lynn, it’s great to see you.’ Tommy pulled me aside and said, ‘I thought you told me you didn’t know him.’ I was stunned. How could I forget meeting Pete Townshend? I went to my studio the next day and looked through my file cabinets. I’d been on tour with the Who for a few days in 1978. It’s bad enough that I have a difficult time remembering names, but to not remember being on tour? When I’m working in a documentary style, I put myself in a mental zone where I think no one can see me. I’m not really there, because I keep myself separate from everyone. I bet Pete can understand that.” – Lynn Goldsmith
