Iggy Pop. I was standing in line to register for my freshman classes at the University of Michigan.  I was wearing black high-heeled boots,  skintight blue and red pinstriped bell-bottom jeans, and a studded black leather jacket. No one in Ann Arbor dressed like that. My sister had sent me some clothes from New York. I looked really “hip,” like I knew all about sex and drugs and rock and roll. The truth was that I was as conventional as they come. Standing in line on one side of me was a skinny white guy with an afro, and on the other side was a guy with long hair, big eyes, and a navy blue striped T-shirt. It was as if a magic brush painted us all there together because all the other kids in line looked like typical Midwesterners, with well-groomed hair, button-down shirts, and penny loafers.  The guy with the Afro spoke first. “Hi, my name is Panther,” continuing with great authority and using his thumb to point to the guy next to me, “Your name is Iggy.” He looked me deep in the eyes and said, “Your name is Famous.” We became good friends and kept those names throughout college. One of us kept it from then on: Iggy. – Lynn Goldsmith
