Bill Withers. I rode in the limousine with Bill to the airport for our charter flight to Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire. On the way, he told me how excited he was to go home to Africa. I argued with him that he was an American, a symbol of who we are, the melting pot of the world. When the plane landed a number of artists who identified with Africa, as Bill did, kissed the ground. They were now in their motherland. Being white, I suddenly became persona non grata in the group and I felt very much alone. Bill saw how I was being treated and, worse get, how the native Africans were being treated. He no longer wanted to identify as a black man who had finally returned to his origins. When we were waiting around at the airport for our return flight to New York, he said to me, “Lynn, you’re right, I’m an American.”
