Lynn Goldsmith – Bruce Springsteen, 1978

“The motorcycle jacket. I got this studded black leather motor-cycle jacket when I was going to the University of MIchigan and singing with the Walking Wounded. A decade later, I was using it for photo shoots. Once in a while I still wore it. IN about 1996 I was clearing out my studio’s clothing and prop closet and decided to give away and sell much of what I had stored there. Imagine my surprise when I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio and saw the leather jacket in a plexiglass case in the Bruce Springsteen Exhibit! It made me laugh, as bruce never really liked the jacket. Too many studs for him. He liked simpler clothes. I called the Hall of Fame to see if I could get a picture of it for this book and was told that the exhibit had been loaned out to Graceland. Wow, I remember when Bruce tried sneaking in there and was thrown out-but now he’s gotten into Graceland, and by default so have I!”

Lynn Goldsmith’s imagery is in numerous collections: The Smithsonian, The Polaroid Collection, The Kodak Collection, The Museum of Modern Art, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the permanent collection of Museum Folkwang. She is a multi-awarded portrait photographer whose work has appeared on and between the covers of Life, Newsweek, Time, Rollingstone, Sports Illustrated, People, Elle, Interview, The New Yorker, etc. Her subjects have varied from entertainment personalities to sports stars, from film directors to authors, from the extra-ordinary to the ordinary man on the street.
